Introduction: 16 and Karma

In 1930 the great numerologist Florence Campbell in  her pioneering book Your Days Are Numbered listed 16, along with 13, 14, and 19 as karmic numbers. As noted by Campbell, some people with the number 16 prominent in their numbers misused the principle of love in a former lifetime and consequently in this lifetime, they may meet with experiences where they are crucified on the cross of love (6) in order to attain a more spiritual (7) approach to life.  Quite simply, 16 often means a broken heart, and questions about why the relationship went wrong, often lead to questions such as what is the meaning of life.  Many 16s have the karma to teach us something about love.

16s who have committed adultery in a former lifetime and repeat that experience in this lifetime may experience a loss of reputation and subsequent  isolation (7) from the community (6) , perhaps John Edwards and Sandra Bullock’s ex-husband Jesse James will serve as examples.

In my own research, I have found that many 16s use that number in a positive way and are valuable critics (7) of society and its values (6), for example Jane Austen, Susan Sontag, and Ice-T.  However, isolation from the community for other 16s can occur through addiction, i.e. the misuse of drugs and alcohol. In my book  Little Giant Encyclopedia of Numerology, which was published in 2005, I listed 16 people with 16 prominent in their numerology who had problems with either drugs or alcohol.  The list included John Belushi, Judy Garland, River Phoenix, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Kurt Cobain, Dylan Thomas, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, etc.

I am the first numerologist ever to make make a correlation between addiction, karma, and the number 16.  I believe that some 16s have a karma in connection with addiction that stems from a former lifetime and that these individuals in this lifetime will be tempted  to become addicts again or if that not be the case, will have friends or relatives with addiction problems who require their support. In other words, some 16s who have experienced problems with drugs or alcohol in a former lifetime have the karma in this lifetime  to teach the rest of us something about addiction, for example, Betty Ford who founded the Betty Ford Clinic and Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Since I wrote that book in 2005, we can sadly add to my list of 16s who experienced trouble with substance abuse the names of Anna Nicole Smith, her son Daniel, Heath Ledger, and Brad Renfro.  Thank God Eminem with his 16 Soul urge survived his near fatal experience with prescription drugs and the heroin substitute methadone. Here’s an excerpt from the lyrics of ” Deja Vu “by Eminem from the album Relapse (2009) that tells us about that incident

See me and you we almost had the same outcome, Heath
Cuz that Christmas, you know the whole pneumonia thing?
It was bologna, was it the methadone ya think?
Or the hydrocodone you hide inside your pornos
Your VCR tapes cases with your Ambien CR, great places
To hide ‘em ain’t it? So you can lie to Hailie
“I’m goin’ bed-e-bye Whintey baby, good night Alaina!”
Go in the room and shut the bedroom door
And wake up in an ambulance
They said they found me on the bathroom floor

Eminem -  A Mini Numerology Profile

MARSHALL     BRUCE       MATHERS (birth name)

Soul Urge (sum of vowels) = 16/7

Quiet Self (sum of consonants = 12/3

Expression (full name) = 10/1

Missing Letters/Numbers in name -  no 6 (F O X)    no 7 (G P Y)

Eminem’s birth name (the expression) adds up to 1, which indicates that he can stand on his own two feet, is independent, self-reliant, original, sometimes egotistical and aggressive, has the courage of his convictions, and is strong-willed. In other words, he is a strong, tough, macho guy. As his birth date 10/17/1972 also adds up to the number 1, life will give him the opportunity for self-perfection.  His destiny is  to find and then do his own thing. Certainly, Eminen is unique, a trailblazer, a leader, who epitomizes the qualities of his 1 expression and his 1 life path number.

With 3 as his quiet self number (sometimes called the personality number) Eminem is youthful in manner and appearance.  He dreams of a life that is carefree and creative, enjoys being before and audience and hearing the applause,  likes being popular and gives off  the vibe of a person with a pleasing personality and a sense of humour.

However, to find out what really motivates Eminem we need to look at his soul urge number (the sum of the vowels in his birth name) which is 16/7.  Here I will focus on meanings associated with 7, and a bit later, I will tell you how these meanings are modified by the fact that Eminem’s 7 is derived from the number 16. Though Eminem’s  3  personality number gives others the impression that he is talkative, upbeat, and yes cheerful, that 3 exterior hides a 7 inner self that is private, serious-minded, analytical, and reflective.

People with 7 as a soul urge want to accomplish something of a mental nature. They are concerned with the mysteries of life and anxious to figure out life’s meaning. Though Eminem the performer loves to rap, Eminem the private person doesn’t like small talk. — empty chit- chat.  7 soul urges need privacy to be alone with their thoughts; at the same time they fear loneliness.   They also tend to be secretive, or rather they do not wear their hearts on their sleeves.  They are not people persons and are slow to take others into their confidence.  Their tendency to be aloof, shy, and withdrawn makes it hard for others to understand them. Often they are perfectionists,  and when acting negatively,  can be overly critical and sarcastic.

Missing numbers in a name are called karmic lacks; their absence suggests experiences that you have consciously avoided or misused in former lifetimes.  Missing numbers represent weak links in the character, that if not strengthened, can lead to all sorts of problems.  Eminem is missing 7, the same number as the number of his soul urge.  What does this mean?  From the viewpoint of reincarnation theory, Eminem’s soul has chosen to come back to earth to pick up the qualities of the missing 7 in his name.  People missing 7 in their name have to learn how to be alone without being lonely. A missing 7 often means a lack of spiritual awareness with a need to develop faith, if not in God or religion, they still need to develop their spirituality — to develop a philosophy of living.  People missing 7 tend to worry too much.  If the slightest thing goes wrong, they expect the worst to happen. Missing 7 needs to replace the fear of the unknown with faith in the future. Life will throw missing 7s into situations where their philosophy of life (or lack of one) is tested. Some missing 7s give way to despair, to substance abuse,  to feelings of isolation and hopelessness — they need to learn “that this too will pass” — that tomorrow will indeed be a brighter day.

To summarize, Eminem has come pack to earth to learn lessons that he failed to learn in former lifetimes.  His  7 soul urge gives him the resolve to deal with whatever problems that may arise in life due to his missing 7. — or to say this in another way, this duo of conflicting 7s actually will combine into an ability to learn from his experiences. From a psychological perspective, his missing 7 may give him a subconscious fear (7) that he will never attain what wants out of life (i.e. his 7 soul urge); at the same time, though, this fear of failure can have the obverse effect of making him exceedingly ambitious to attain his goals.

Eminem is also missing the number 6 in his birth name.  A minus 6 person has avoided situations in former lifetimes that involve assuming responsibilities or handled them  poorly– often in connection with family.  Sometimes there is a fear of commitment or being tied down.  Consequently, in this life time the minus 6 person in most cases has to give more than he or she gets in relationships with friends, family, and spouses, as these people will be dependent on him or her, often in unwelcome or burdensome ways.  You’ll find on other blogs or in Eminem’s music, references to how he felt let down by both of his parents and the difficulties he had in his marriage, so I won’t repeat that information here.  I suppose the fact that both his parents had problems with substance abuse we can chalk up to karma. After his own near-death experience with drugs, he has become more understanding of  her experiences with drugs and is leaning towards a more  compassionate and forgiving perspective towards her ( Flash from the spirit world: the quickest way to dissolve karma – forgiveness.)

Many people have a simplistic view toward karma, a Mosaic law interpretation of tit for tat, i.e. you did this wrong and now bad things happen to you. From my perspective, karma deals with principles rather than events.  for example, Eminem with his minus 6 has a karma in connection with home and family. In this lifetime, he will meet with situations involving the principles associated with the number 6 with the chance to do things right this time around.  For Eminem, it is through his music that he pays his karmic debts. and in the process sets himself free. For example, in 2005, he wrote the beautiful song “When I’m Gone” which with heartfelt words states his regret for neglect of his family, especially his daughter Hailie. With Eminem away for long periods of time due to his demanding schedule as a top rap performer,  he wasn’t always there for his daughter.  This song is his way of saying “I’m sorry”.  Listen to the embedded video below of “When I’m Gone” to get a better understanding of how Eminem has positively dealt with and transcended the karma associated with his missing 6.

Eminem and his 16 Soul Urge

Missing numbers in your name represent personal karma, whereas 13, 14, 16, an 19 are the numbers associated with universal karma.  Though what I am going to say now may be an over-simplification, matters related to personal karma are less likely to hit the headlines than matters associated with universal karma.

Eminem is a public figure and we are already aware of some of the ways his number 16 soul urge has manifested in his life.  Married twice to his ex-wife childhood sweetheart Kim, he was involved in a turbulent relationship with her. Having to deal with her attempted suicide and the difficulties they experienced together makes Florence Campbell’s phrase about 16. “crucifixion on the cross of love” seem applicable.

I said earlier that many 16s play a positive role in the community as critics of society and its values. I believe that Eminem has tried to assume this mantle but with mixed results.  Some of his celebrity bashing is definitely out of bounds and he has achieved a certain notoriety for stirring up controversy, being labeled a homophobe, a misogynist, a racist, and the list goes on. Still, even so, every once in a while, he’s right on target regarding some of the abuses that effect our society. Perhaps, in time, he will find his true voice and role. Remember, he’s not dead yet …but he almost was.

In 2005, due to substance abuse problems, Eminem took a 4 year hiatus from recording songs. It was a difficult time for him and recovery was a slow and painful process. After the death of best friend in 2006, he was devastated and soon after relapsed. He returned to the public eye with his 2009 album Relapse and on April 29,2010 released “Not Afraid” the first single from his upcoming album Recovery, to be released on June 21, 2010.  In the week before the release of Recovery, he let the world know for the first time in a television interview that what prompted his recovery from prescription drugs abuse was the fact that he overdosed and nearly died.  This was simply stated.  No embellishments needed. After all, Eminem was not a role model, in fact he is an anti-role model.

The public has grown tired of philandering politicians with their abused wives at their sides apologizing for their infidelities and athletes like Tiger Woods trying to rebuild his image with carefully guarded (and wooden) statements to the media.  So Eminem’s matter of fact statement that he nearly died was refreshing. He didn’t go into rehab for his fans’ sake, he went into rehab for himself — to save his own life.

As I said earlier, Eminem pays back his karma through his music. What impressed me about his new single “Not Afraid” is that Eminem in this song reaches out to other people who have problems with substance abuse and recovery. He does not lecture them, rather he let’s them in his rapping see his own loneliness, his own difficulties in traveling the road to recovery. He shares his loneliness with other lonely people and in doing so has become a role model for them.  From the song:

Yea, It’s been a ride….
I guess I had to, go to that place to get to this one
Now some of you, might still be in that place
If you’re trying to get out, just follow me
I’ll get you there.

Now we see that throughout the years Eminem was not simply airing the dirty laundry of his personal life for all to see in his music. His anger, his “self-pity”, his whatever — it was all authentic.  He did not set up a  rehab clinic like Betty Ford, nor did he start a 12-step program like Bill Wilson, but in his own inimitable way he has used his 16/7 soul urge and his minus 7 in a positive way…..and could we ask for anything more from a rapper with a 16 soul urge and a minus 7. Is Eminem a saint disguised as a sinner?
