Numerology: 16 and The Tower of Babel

image266The Tower depicted in the 16th Tarot card is the Biblical Tower of Babel. According to Genesis 11: 1-9, the people of Babylon desired to make a name for themselves by building a mighty city and a magnificent tower “with its top in the heavens”. This was offensive to God and he disrupted the work by so confusing the language of the workers that suddenly they could no longer understand one another. As a result, work on the city and the tower was abandoned, and the people were dispersed over the face of the earth. This is the Bible’s explanation of the existence of diverse human languages. Prior to the Babylonians’ attempt to build a mighty tower, there was only one language; now, there is a confusion of tongues.

Noted linguist (Avram) Noam Chomsky was born with 16 letters in his birth name and in 1957 he proposed a theory of grammar that rejects the notion that every language is unique. He, so to speak, takes us back to pre-Babylon times with its one universal language by showing us that all languages have some basic structural principles in common.

American lexicographer and philologist Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758. He wrote on the relationship of European and Asian languages, but his greatest achievement was his The American Dictionary of the English Language (1828), which included definitions of 70,00 words, of which 12,000 words had not appeared in such a work before. He helped standardize American pronunciation. To this day Webster’s dictionaries remain popular – and remain a valuable tool towards the elimination of the confusion of the tongues.

Marshall McLuhan

 In the 1960s, (Herbert) Marshall McLuhan with his 16 expression told us that electronic mass media were collapsing space and time barriers in human communication to enable people to communicate on a global scale. He coined the term global village to describe this change.  Many people, though, thought that he was either a genius or a bit off the wall in his thinking. History, though, has proven McLuhan to be a true prophet.

In his Understanding Media (1964), McLuhan says that in the future many people would no longer want to get into their cars to go shopping, but would shop instead by TV, a prophecy that doesn’t seem so strange at all now. He also foretold the day when languages could be instantly translated by computers, now a daily occurrence for representatives at the United Nations and for Internet users who use the Google Search engine (press the magic key and instantly that page in German is translated into English). He goes on to say) that language itself with its powers of division and separation may have been the Tower of Babel by which man sought to scale the highest heavens. (Note, there are 22 rows of brick masonry in the Tower depicted on the 16th Tarot Card, which occultist Paul Foster Case equates with the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.)

  In the words of McLuhan: “The computer, in short, promises by technology a Pentecostal condition of universal understanding and unity. The next logical step would seem to be, not to translate, but to bypass languages in favor of a general cosmic consciousness…”  (See page 84 Understanding Media, New American Library.)

image274McLuhan summarized his vision of the global village well before the Internet even existed. Today, many people would argue that the Internet, more than any other medium, has helped bring the global village closer to fruition. Marshall McLuhan in teaching us how to understand media has certainly done his part to pave the way for that day when a true global consciousness of community will exist, one that reflects the ultimate harmony of all being and the end of mankind’s confusion of tongues.

Numerology: 13 and Death

If you’re wondering if someone with 13 in his or her name or birth date was responsible for the 1980 film Friday the 13th, you’re correct! Sean S. Cunningham (12/31/1941), who was born with a 13 life path, directed the first Friday the 13th and also produced Friday the 13th’s last sequel Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday (1993). Other notable 13s associated with horror and the arts include Edgar Allan Poe (13 letters in his name); Robert Louis Stevenson (11/13/1809), author of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Rod Serling (13 quiet self), creator of TV’s The Twilight Zone; John Carpenter (13 quiet self), director of the film Halloween; and actor Boris Karloff (13 life path).

However, not all horror films or books are created by 13s. If it’s work of genius, it might have been created by an 11 (Anne Rice, Clive Barker, and Wes Craven  – 11 soul urge; Stephen King – 11 letters in the name); and remember some producers of horror films are in it just for money, so that is why 8 is often prominent in their numbers. However, if the purpose of a horror movie is to teach us something about death and our fear of it, then, a 13 might have created it.

13 is definitely a number that is associated with death, but that does not mean a priori that it has a greater penchant for violence than any other number. All numbers, in other words, all human beings, are capable of violent acts, 13 included. Remember that most deaths are the result of disease, not violence, and perhaps this explains why many 13s become physicians, especially pathologists.

Today forensic medicine has become a staple of the entertainment world. The popular TV crime series Quincy was based on the true life exploits of medical examiner Thomas T. Noguchi (13 quiet self) who is best known as the man who performed the autopsy on Marilyn Monroe, and was often described as ‘coroner of the stars’. American writer Patricia Cornwell (13 quiet self) is the author of the best-selling series of crime novels featuring the tenacious but compassionate Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Virginia’s Chief Medical Examiner. Jerry Bruckheimer (9/21/1945) with a 13 life path is the executive producer of TV’s top crime/forensic dramas CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and CSI Miami.

Tennyson, Brahms, and Garth Brooks

In coming to terms with their personal grief after the death of a loved one, many 13s have created lasting works of art that continually offer comfort and hope to others who are bereaved. Inspired by the grief he felt at the untimely death of his best friend Hallam, Alfred Tennyson (13 quiet self) wrote In Memoriam, a poem in which he searches for the meaning of life and death and tries to come to terms with his sense of loss.  Queen Victoria loved this poem and soon after it was published, Tennyson was made poet laureate of England.

In 1868 Johannes Brahms (13 soul urge) completed his most famous choral (A German Requiem), which had occupied him since the death of his good friend, fellow composer Robert Schuman in 1856.  With A German Requiem, which is still considered one of the most significant works of 19th-century choral music, Brahms moved into the front rank of German composers. Below is a video from Brahm’s Requiem entitled ” Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”.

After the death of his mother, Garth Brooks (13 quiet self and 13 soul urge) wrote “When You Come Back To Me Again” to honor her memory, but he is best known for his rendition of the song “The Dance” written by his good friend Tony Arata  ( birth name Anthony Michael Arata with a 13 quiet self). “The Dance” has become so embedded in our musical heritage that it has been used during memorial services and television events commemorating such tragedies as September 11th, The Oklahoma City Bombing, and countless funeral services for individuals throughout the world. It was probably this song, more than any other, that catapulted Garth Brooks to superstardom.

Numerology: George Harrison – Born on February 24, 1943

Remembering George Harrison

George Harrison had believed his birthday was February 25th for his entire life. However, a good deal of confusion as to his real birthday was solved when a family birth record noted him as being born shortly before midnight around 11:50 P.M.) on February 24th, 1943.

This indicates that George was born with a life path number of 7.  For people with a 7 life path, meaning and purpose in life comes through the inner life. George’s destiny was to develop a workable philosophy of life  through intuition, faith, study and reflection.  Many people with a 7 life path number choose a spiritual path and this was certainly true of George.

Stephenie Meyer, Numerology & Twilight (update)

In 1831 the author Mary Shelley recalled that the idea for the novel Frankenstein came to her in a waking dream in the summer of 1816. One night in late September or early October 1885 Robert Louis Stevenson awoke from a dream that contained two or three scenes from what soon would become his novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. On June 2,2003 the idea for  the book Twilight came to Stephenie Meyer in a dream about a girl and a sparkling vampire sitting in a meadow.

What is fascinating to the student of numerology is that Stephenie had her dream of  Bella Swan and her vampire lover Edward Cullen on the 2nd, as 2 is a number that relates to couples and 2 is also the number of her life path. (Stephenie’s birthdate 12 (3) + 24 (6) + 1973 (2) – 11/2 life path).  What’s more 6+ 2 + 2003 (5) adds up to 13, the karmic number associated with the Death Card in the Tarot and vampires.  A  look at the numbers of Stephenie’s name at birth.

People with an 11/2 life path are messengers of the gods — they receive revelations from above — messages to transmit to humanity. I believe that destiny was calling when Stephenie had her dream. Without prior writing experience, within a three month span she completes Twilight and doesn’t stop there but goes on to write  additional novels about Bella and Edward.

Souls with a 13 soul urge come to earth with a desire to teach us something about death as it relates to the meaning of life and individuals with a 2 life path have something to tell us about love and relationships.  A 13 soul urge combined with a 2 life path in Stephenie’s case equals Twilight, a gothic (13) romance (2).   The book(s) have vampires, ie. 13, and above all else, the Twilight saga is a love story (2).

On the same day she had her dream, Stephenie began writing Twilight. She started with the contents of the dream itself and wrote a transcript of every detail she could remember. It probably is a coincidence that  this initial transcript would later become Chapter 13 of the book. But is it a coincidence that there are 544 pages in the hardcover of the book (544 = the number 13) and that the book was first published on 10/5/2005, a day that also adds up to 13. And is it a coincidence that Robert Pattinson who plays Edward in the Twilight saga was born on the 13th day of May — and that Kristen Stewart who plays the heroine Bella in the Twilight films was born on 4/9 with a 13 Success Number (4+9 =13)?

We get further corroboration that the number 13 is integral to the story of   Twilight from the promotional material released to the public before the film adaptation of the novel premiered on 11/21/1908.

Note the date on the lower left corner of the poster. It is not 11/21/2008. rather it is 11 21 08 ..a date that adds up to 13 (ie; 11/2 + 21/3 +8 = 13).  Though the number 13 does not actually appear on this poster, the fact that 11 21 08 does  equal 13, we have a sublimal message here saying this is a film about meanings associated with 13. I call this abbreviated form of numerology (for want of a better name) “Twilight numerology”.

Can history repeat itself twice ?– apparantly so, when it comes to films related to the Twilight series. The Twilight Saga: New Moon premiered on 11/20/2009, a date that adds up to 6. However, promotional material for New Moon listed the date as 11 20 09 (11/2+2 + 9 = 13), another instance of 13 by use of “Twilight numerology.”

The third installment of the Twilight Saga film series, Eclipse, is scheduled for release on June 30, 2010 – by “Twilight numerology”  6 30 10 (6 + 3 +1 = 10).  Has the string been broken? - as this day does not add up to 13.  Or will the release be delayed or set for an earlier date? that will add up to 13?  Time will tell soon enough. Whatever the case, Stephenie Meyer (nee Morgan) and the numbers 13 and 2 will be forever  linked for reasons other than the ones already stated in this blog — for reasons that will be stated below.

The question has been raised is the character Bella Swan in any way similar to her creator. In other words, is Twlight autobiographical? The author dismisses that idea by saying that Bella is much more mature than Stephenie was at her age. I as a numerologist would both agree and disagree with Stephenie’s comments.

Stephenie tells us Bella Swan’s birth name is Isabella Marie Swan, a name that adds up to 2, whereas the name Stephenie  Morgan adds up to the introspective 7, a number that savors its privacy.   As already stated, Stephenie’s soul urge is 13/4, a number that is much more conservative than Isabella Maria Swan’s adventurous (and somewhat accident prone) 14/5 soul urge.

However, Stephenie has also provided us with Bella’s birthdate. She was born 9/13/1987 and shares with Stephenie the number 2 as a life path. This would indicate that both of them have something to teach us about love and relationships. In Bella’s case, one could say that being born on the 13th,  she had to become a vampire (a 13)  in order to achieve her 2 life path goal of a romantic partnership. Assuming that Stephenie Meyer may be ignorant of numerology, it is absolutely uncanny that she would bestow her creation Bella with the core numbers of 13 and 2, the same numbers that were predominant on June 2,2003  (6+2 +5 = 13), the day the concept of Bella and Twilight came to her in a dream. Since Bella and Stephenie both have the numbers 2 and 13 prominent in their personal numerology, they do in fact share some similar characteristics and will meet with similar (not identical) challenges and successes in life.

It also should be noted that the town of Forks, Washington, where the Twilight Saga takes place, annually celebrates Bella’s birthday 9/13 as Stephenie Meyer day.

How to find your personal year

In nu­merology, whenever we encounter a compound num­ber, we reduce it to a single digit by adding the num­bers together. For example, 2010 (2+0+1+0) equals 3

Each person has his or her own Personal Year, Personal Month, and Personal Day numerical vibrations. Let’s say you were born on February 5, 1963, and you want to know the number of your Personal Year in 2010. To find out, you would add the day and the month of your birth to the number of the Universal Year. 2010 is a 3 Uni­versal Year, so you would add 2 + 5 + 3 to find your Personal Year, which would be 10 or 1.

Because the numbers of the Personal Years have their own sequence from 1 to 9, it is important for you to tune in to their rhythms.

A 1 Year is a time to go after what you want, to keep moving, and to exercise initiative. 1 years always signify new starts.

A 2 Year is a time to be cooperative, to follow rather than to lead. Things begun in a 1 Year grow slowly during a 2 Year. Don’t expect immediate results. Do small things that will make last year’s new start work. This is a time to be receptive. The accent is on partner­ships and on give and take in close relationships.

As a poet, the lines he is most remembered for are these from Auguries of Innocence

“To see the world in a grain of sand, to hold infinity in the palm of your hand.”

 A true iconoclast, he marched to the best of his own visions. He was at odds with conventions, especially those of established religions and of the society in which he lived.   Pictured left is one of his more famous paintings, “Ancient of Days”, which depicts his vision of God and the creation.  When asked to make prints of the life of slaves, he chose images that were purposefully designed to shock people in order to let them know how brutal slavery was.

Chris Weitz, New Moon, and the number 13

In an interview with Fansite Fridays on 9/4/2009, Chris Weitz was asked the following question about New Moon:

Do you have a favorite scene that you are anxious to see?

Chris: …  I am excited about the final showdown with Taylor, Kristen and Rob because I feel that the chemistry is just fantastic. Their relationships are just fantastic. They work the way they are supposed to. That you can understand exactly what they are supposed to.

Judging from the expressions on the faces of this talented trio of actors in the above photo, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Robert Pattinson have a  “chemistry” in real life as well as on the screen.

Not surprising when you realize that Robert Pattinson was born on the 13th (5/13/1986) and both Kristen Stewart (4/9 = 13) and Taylor Lautner (2/11 – 13) have 13 as their Success Numbers ( the Success number  is the sum  of  the day and month of birth).  And that Chris Weitz is so enthusiastic about their performances in New Moon indicates that he is not only the director of this film, but he is also a fan as well. He is definitely on the same wave length as the stars of this film,  for he was born with a 13 soul urge and a 13 quiet self in his name. Throw in the fact that Stephenie Meyer ( birth name Stephenie Morgan), the author of the Twilight saga, also was born with a 13 soul urge — and what we have here in New Moon is one great big happy family of 13s.

13 is associated with the Death Card in the Tarot. People born with 13 in their names/birth dates have a karma to teach the rest of us something about our fear of dying and the meaning of life.  By default, vampires are associated with the number 13, for vampires relate to our fear of dying and our wish to be immortal.  The key players involved wtih this film have come together to teach us something about the number 13.

Maybe when you were a child, your mother read you some lines of poetry from Robert Louis Stevenson’s  A Child’s Garden of Verses or perhaps as a young adult you read his adventure novels Treasure Island and Kidnapped. If reading was not your thing when you were growing up, you still might have seen a film or TV adaptation of these classic tales.  Robert Louis Stevenson’s birth name was Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson, a name that adds up to 3, the number most commonly associated with both writing and childen.

5 is the number of adventure and also the number of Stevenson’s ruling passion number. Not only did he write An Island Village, Traveling with a Donkey and four other travelogues,  but he also published a collection of non-fiction articles and essays on his travels in the Pacific. As he once said, “I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.”

Robert Louis Stevenson was born on 11/13/1850.  People born on the 13th often have a liking for mysteries, suspense, theimage260

This was certainly true of Robert Louis Stevenson, whose novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde contains all the aforementioned qualites.  As a horror tale, this story reflects the themes of 13, Stevenson’s birthday number, but as the story of the divided self, a man conflicted with the good and evil sides  of his nature, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reflects the themes of Stevenson’s 11/2 life path number, for 2 is the number of duality.  Significantly,  The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Hyde was first published on January 5, 1886, a day that adds up to 2. Since that date in 1886, there have been over 123 film adaptations of this book. To this day The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ranks as one of the most popular tales of horror ever written

Is The Plague-Seller a story written by Edgar Allan Poe? No, it is not. Is  The Body Snatcher the title of an upcoming slasher film?  No it is not. And finally, is The Suicide Club a sequel to the cult classic The Fight Club? No it is not.  Though these titles seem like they were written today, they are actually titles of short stories written by Robert Louis Stevenson at the end of the 19th century.  Stevenson  wrote several of what he termed “dark adventures” and all these stories  are of the horror genre. He even wrote a story called Olalla, which is about vampirism.  The only point I wish to make here that there are other stories, besides The Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. written by Stevenson  that reflect the gothic themes of his 13 birthdate.

Stevenson often signed letters and other documents with his initials. “R.L.S.” R=9 + L = 3 + S = 1 ..total 13. This is another indicator that Stevenson (who had no knowledge of numerology) thought of himself as a 13.

Robert Louis Stevenson suffered from a tubercular-like  condition both in childhood and adulthood.  These were the days before modern medicine, a time when a tubercular condition could mean death, as in the case of  the poet John Keats.

Yet Stevenson wrote during sickness and health. Still the shadow of death often hovered over him and consequently, he treasured every smell of a flower, every dawn, every sunset. He lived life for the moment, for  who knows if tomorrow would ever come. Perhaps, what I just said, explains why in childhood Stevenson was a frequent visitor to a nearby graveyard. In his book of essays,  Memories and Portraits (1887), published when Stevenson was age 37,  he recalls the days when he would hang out at a graveyard ( hang out is the wrong word, for Stevenson was a solitary visitor). The title of Chapter 3 ” Old Mortality” refers to  the dead people buried in the graveyard.  In the beginning, Stevenson  enjoyed reading the epitaphs on tombstones (one day he would write his own epitaph, but more about that later).  With the short attention span of a young person, he got bored doing that and turned his attention to watching and talking to gravediggers as well as those who visit cemeteries to pay homage to their deceased brethren.

Stevenson is in top form in this book. the writing is excellent. Besides what I have told you so far, there are recollections of people he knew at different stages in their lives,ie. what they were like in full health and what they were like near the time of their death. These are observations made by a 37 year old man, albeit a talented writer.

At age 28,  Stevenson wrote a magazine article with the title Aes Triplex, which was subsequently published  in book form in 1881, when Stevenson was only 31 years old. Rather then give you a detailed explanation of what  the Latin words “aes triplex” means, I’ll give you a quicky definition…aes triuplex means “triple bronze”  (a reference to armor). which in short stands for “courage in the face of battle”. Battle as interpreted by Stevenson means courage in the face of death. From the perspective of reincarnation theory, 13 is considered to be a karmic number. People with this number have the karma to teach us something about overcoming our fear of death and that is exactly what Stevenson does in this essay.  Here Stevenson meets death head on.

The essay is too good and too long to paraphrase here. It must be read in its entirety. If you could consider me your teacher in this blog, then I would assign all students who have the number 13 somewhere in their numerology to read this essay in full as their home work. Yes,it is that good..it will give you an understanding of 13 that can’t be found elsewhere ( and certainly not in a numerology book). I will give you the opening lines here with  a link where you can read the full essay.

Opening lines:

“The changes wrought by death are in themselves so sharp and final, and so terrible and melancholy in their consequences, that the thing stands alone in man’s experience, and has no parallel upon earth. It outdoes all other accidents because it is the last of them.”

Even now, I am tempted to paraphrase, to give you the essence of Stevenson’s message, but I am not as a good a writer as he was,and anything I might say now would do him an injustice. You’ll just have to read the whole essay… it’s really not that long, but too long to include in a blog.

Stevenson’s  message about how to overcome our fear of death applies to everyone, and especially to people who have 13 as a significant number in their names/birth dates.  But how did Stevenson face the prospect of his own death?

In 1879 Stevenson  was seriously ill. He thought he was going to die, and so he wrote his “Requiem”. Stevenson  managed to cheat death another fifteen years, but his “Requiem” shall live after him for evermore, as it is one of the most popular poems every written by anyone who has ever lived on this earth.

The 3 Birthday (Born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st, 30th)

There is no better place for 3 as a birthday number than on a talk show, e.g. talk show hosts David Letterman (4/12/1947), Montel Williams (7/3/1956), Rosie O’Donnell  (3/21/1962), Phil Donahue (12/21/1935), and Matt Lauer (12/30/1957) were all born on days that add up to 3. .. . which means that all five of these talk show hosts are skilled communicators. Yet there are differences and it is the birthday number unreduced which reveals these differences. Montel Williams born on the 3rd is carefree, optimistic, talkative, and has a “what, me worry” demeanor.  David Letterman, born on the 12th has greater promotional skills and showmanship. Both Rosie O’Donnell and Phil Donahue, born on the 21st are intuitive, but can be suspicious of others’ motives. Because Matt Lauer is born on the 30th, he is more inclined to be fixed in his viewpoints and can be outspoken.   Again, I repeat, because these five talk hosts were born on days that add up to 3, they are all masters of small talk, but their birthday numbers unreduced reveal their differences in style.
